To determine how many filters your import has, check the service section of your owner’s manual. Your import definitely has an air, fuel, and oil filter. It might also have a cabin air filter and a transmission filter. Let’s talk about these different filters below, what they do, and the basic recommendations for when they need to be changed.
Air
The air filter is located in the engine. Its primary responsibility is to clean the dirt and debris out of the air that flows into the engine from the outside. This filter can affect your engine’s performance when it gets clogged. To avoid clogging the air filter, have it changed once a year at a maximum. If you drive more than 12,000 miles before the year is up, have the filter changed then.
Cabin
Your import might also be equipped with a cabin air filter. This filter helps to keep the air inside the passenger cabin clean and free of irritants. In most cases, you will find the cabin filter behind the glovebox. Generally, this filter should be changed every 30,000 miles. Some manufacturers recommend that you change the cabin air filter more often.
Fuel
The fuel filter purifies the gasoline or diesel fuel twice. You should change the fuel filter every two years at a maximum. If you drive more than 30,000 miles before the two years are up, change the fuel filter at the 30,000-mile mark.
Oil
The oil filter is changed during an oil change service. Therefore, the filter is changed whenever you have your import’s oil changed, whether that is every 3,000 miles, 7,500 miles, or 10,000 miles. The oil filter makes sure that the oil is always free of contaminants when it circulates through the engine. In other words, it cleans the oil after each circulation.
Transmission
Finally, as we said above, your import may or may not have a transmission oil filter. As its name suggests, the transmission filter cleans the transmission oil or fluid to make sure it is always free of dirt and contaminants. This filter should be changed every 30,000 miles at a maximum.
