The Battery Keeps Dying in My Import

If the battery keeps dying in your import, it’s possible that it needs to be replaced or that you need a new alternator. If the battery is three years old or older, it could be the problem. If the battery is relatively new, the alternator is not keeping the battery charged. Uptown Imports advises that this is one of the things that the alternator does. Here are other signs that your alternator is going bad.

Battery Warning Light

You may also end up with a warning light on the dashboard that is in the shape of a battery. This light will turn on if there is a problem with the alternator, the battery, or your import’s electrical system. Take this warning seriously and bring your import to our shop so we can determine why the battery light is on.

Engine Stalling Frequently

You may also end up with the check engine warning when the engine stalls. This is a sign that the alternator is not powering the spark plugs. The spark plugs need power in order to produce sparks in the combustion chamber. If they are not getting enough power, they will misfire and your engine will stall.

Hot Electricity Odors

The alternator is supposed to generate voltage between 13 volts and 14.5 volts. Sometimes, when it is going bad, it will produce excess electricity that overheats the electrical system. Consequently, you will end up with hot electricity odors coming from your engine. This can start an electrical fire.

Malfunctioning Accessories

Another sign that the alternator is not operating as it should be is problems with your import’s accessories. The power accessories, such as the windows and seats, may slow down. You may also end up with a malfunctioning navigation system, radio, or touchscreen.

Strange Growling Noises

As the alternator wears out, it will start to make growling noises in your import’s engine. These noises can also sound as if the alternator is grinding. As an aside, grinding noises can also indicate a problem with oil circulation, so we recommend that you have your import towed to our shop.

Strange Light Problems

Finally, a faulty alternator is going to mess with your import’s lights. If the alternator is generating too much power, all of the lights on the vehicle will be unusually bright. If the alternator is struggling to produce power, the lights will be to dim. They may also flicker.
