Signs My Import’s Transmission Fluid Needs to Be Changed

You may not realize that it is time to have your import’s transmission fluid changed because it’s hard to check this fluid as the dipstick is usually underneath the automobile. As such, you should check your owner’s manual to see the recommended changing schedule. Uptown Imports advises that this schedule is usually every 30,000 miles. The color of the transmission fluid reveals its health. Let’s talk more about this.

Red

For example, you always want transmission fluid that is red and translucent in your import’s transmission. This is the color the fluid should be, and it is the color of healthy transmission fluid. The transmission fluid serves two purposes in your import, and when it is red, it is doing both jobs effectively. The red fluid is protecting the transmission and helping it shift gears.

Orange

Your transmission fluid does not need to be changed if it is red. It also doesn’t need to be changed if it is orange or light brown. Provided the fluid is still translucent, it remains able to do its job when it is either of these colors. The orange or light brown hue is a sign that the transmission fluid has not oxidized. As such, it can still protect the transmission and help it shift gears.

Brown

The transmission fluid has started oxidizing when it turns brown, and this is the point at which it should be changed. Oxidation means that the fluid is no longer see-through because it is being filled with tiny air bubbles. Unfortunately, these bubbles make it impossible for the fluid to protect the transmission. It also loses some of its hydraulic ability and you will have difficulties with the gear shifts.

Black

If you fail to change your transmission fluid when it turns brown, it will eventually turn black. This fluid is fully oxidized, opaque, and damaging your transmission. You will start to have problems with the transmission such as getting it into gear or getting it to shift through the gear cycle.

Pink

Finally, pink is the color of diluted transmission fluid. This means that there is a leak between the transmission and the cooling system. When this leak occurs, the coolant mixes with the transmission fluid. Unfortunately, this diluted fluid can damage your transmission if you keep driving your import.
