Signs My Import’s Driveshaft Needs to Be Serviced

The driveshaft is the part of the drivetrain that turns the wheels. Power is transferred to the transmission from the engine so the transmission can start the wheels rolling, so to speak. The driveshaft should be inspected once a year along with the drivetrain. The drivetrain is a crucial part of your import that can be forgotten easily. Here are signs your import’s driveshaft is malfunctioning.

Vibration and Shuddering

The driveshaft has several different parts that work together to make it work. Two of these parts are the universal joint or U-joint and the bushings. These parts deal with a lot of vibration. As such, they can wear out over time. When this happens, your import will start to vibrate from the underside. In other words, you will feel the vibration coming from underneath the import.

Another problem that can occur is shuddering when you accelerate your import. This can happen if the U-joint gets too loose. As we mentioned above, this joint deals with a lot of vibration. Another driveshaft part that can get too loose and cause acceleration shuddering is the center bearings. When you accelerate, your import may feel as if it is struggling to run.

Strange Undercarriage Noises

Along with the vibration and shuddering, the driveshaft can also make weird noises underneath the import. For example, the driveshaft needs to have its oil changed just like your import needs its motor oil changed. This fluid keeps things turning smoothly. If the driveshaft is overdue for a fluid change, it may start to squeak. Specifically, the U-joints and bearings will squeak.

Let’s keep talking about the U-joint. This joint is important to the driveshaft. If you start to hear a clunking noise coming from underneath your import, the U-joint could be worn out. As an aside, a knocking noise can also mean you’ve broken a leaf spring on one of the wheels. This noise can also sound as if someone is underneath your import knocking.

The final sounds you may hear coming from the driveshaft are scraping and rattling. These sounds can mean that you need a fluid flush and refill or that some of the driveshaft is wearing out. If you continue to drive your import without having these noises addressed, you could damage the driveshaft and wheels. As such, take immediate action if you hear anything strange.
